Family Night

The 2019 Clay Central Everly Elementary Family Night was held on Tuesday, February 26th. The Family Night planning committee (Mrs. Lori Larson, Mrs. Lynn Cronk, Mrs. Lori Key, Mrs. Val Johnson, and Mrs. Mary Ann Jobst) set out to complete the following goals: to provide an opportunity for CCE families to interact, promote family time together, showcase CCE educational opportunities, and encourage reading/math games at home.  Over 135 adults and children participated in the CCE Family Night.

When families arrived they were greeted by and took a family photo with the Maverick mascot.  Students, along with their families, were given a guide and sent off to enjoy the following activities.  In the StarLab planetarium students and parents alike enjoyed viewing the night sky from inside the large, inflatable Star Lab.  They identified constellations they knew and discovered new ones that they can search for in the future. During the MakerBot 3D printer session families learned about projects teachers have completed using the MakerBot 3D printer and observed the MakerBot printing fraction pie slices that will be used to help students learn fractions.  Students had the opportunity to use Tinkercad to design a 3D model of their own. Students and parents also took home a CCE keychain/zipper pull made with the 3D printer.

One of the newest technology devices at CCE are the Virtual Reality Goggle Expeditions.  Participants explored sea life in underwater landscapes all over the globe. In the art room the students and parents created their own Maverick photo frame for their Family Night photo.  The families practiced manners and learned some new vocabulary (square up, honor your partner, promenade) while square dancing. Families participated in a coding session where the students created a dance party at code.org.  The STEM room was full of excitement with demonstrations of the coding mouse, MBot cars and BlueBot bug machines. They played Tetris and the piano using a circuit board called Makey Makey. Supper was served by RCA members, community members, and CCE staff.

All CCE families received a CCE Maverick bag packed with a free book for each student, Maverick bookmark & pencil, and some reading/math activities.  Research shows that increasing parent involvement can significantly improve students’ success in reading, as well as their ongoing success in education.  The CCE staff encourages families to read together daily during their family time. The 2019 CCE Family Night was sponsored and funded by Clay Central Everly Community School, the Royal Community Action Committee, Title IV, and the Iowa State Education Association Community Outreach Grant.  Thank you to everyone, especially our CCE families, that helped make this night a success!
